Create a Concept Map planning ideas and needs for your Inquiry
Week One:
Pre-test – Have children complete a Venn diagram with physical and chemical changes in each circle. Writing everything they already know about the two changes.
Talk about experiences students have had with science so far.
Class brainstorm: What is Chemistry?
 1. Investigate the ideas you have in regards to
Prior Knowledge Grade 3&4&5
Classify objects into solids liquids and gases. Give students a list of pictures on A3 paper. Complete the Cube Organiser Activity Sheet with ideas – save into folder

Question & Brainstorm

Investigation for your Inquiry
Week Two: Focus: Physical Change
What is a physical change?
Identified matter by describing its physical properties.
Look at particles – how they change between solid liquid and gases. Use water as an example – melting ice: what speeds it up; heat, surface area, etc.
Draw diagrams as to what is happening with the particles.
 1. Open the PowerPoint Workbook Sample and view the kind of workbook you will need to create to gather learning and findings. Create a PowerPoint with headings from scratch based on Solids Liquids and Gases and Year 6 Changing Matter.
Organise, Internalise & Investigate

Experiments and Research
 1. Use the Interactives and sites here to gather information about matter and chemical changes – place your findings with ALT Print Screen captures into your workbook in Powerpoint and explain findings.

Science Report
 1. Open the Science Report Templateand save a copy into your folder – conduct an experiment and write up the findings in the document.

Design Documentary –Work with teams to coach how to use the tools indicated to the right.
 1. Design a video movie collating all you have learned by saving your workbook as JPEGs – help document
 2. Open Movie Maker and gather photos and images as well as slides from workbook and compile the visual components into Movie Maker
 3. If time create an animation using 2Animate and save this as a GIF file and add to the movie to demonstrate a chemical change or change in matter
Stop and Think

Co Construct with students the best medium for communication of ideas and action eg. Publish on the My Classes page
Stop, think and ideate.

ACTION
Rubric Creation with students - ideas. Rubric www.rubistar.com
Create a rubric to assess the effectiveness of a documentary movie.
ADD YOUR OWN NARRATION COMPONENT TO THE MOVIE ON HOW CAN WE USE THIS INFORMATION TO LOOK AFTER OUR GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT AND HOW CHEMICAL CHANGES ARE EFFECTING US ON A GLOBAL SCALE.

Students’ will create a script and film themselves demonstrating an experiment to be put on to a drive to be taken home to their families. Students’ will also demonstrate to their parents on a science morning their chosen experiments.
Celebrate and Innovate

 • What worked well with our experiment?
 • What do I know that happens in my experiment?
 • Students and teacher create and fill in a rubric before reaching a compromise of their end mark.
